Sam Heughan & Jessica De Gouw Dive into Secrets & Relationships in The Couple Next Door

The Couple Next DoorBeneath the polished exterior of this seemingly perfect neighborhood lies a web of secrets and desires that refuse to remain hidden. The Couple Next Door delves into the suffocating dynamics of suburban life and the consequences of pursuing forbidden passions. When Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Pete (Alfred Enoch) move into an affluent community, eager to start a family, they form a bond with the couple next door, Danny (Sam Heughan), an assertive traffic officer, and Becka (Jessica De Gouw), a glamorous yoga instructor. As their relationships deepen, one fateful night leads to an intimate entanglement that irrevocably changes their lives forever.

Stars Heughan and De Gouw recently spoke with SciFi Vision about working on the series, collaborating with the cast, and more.

For both actors, the project offered a unique opportunity to explore layered characters and work within a tight-knit cast.

For Heughan, stepping away from his iconic role as Jamie Fraser was part of the appeal. "It was a completely different character to what I’d been playing on Outlander," he explained. "[Danny is] sort of complex and dark and has a lot of secrets.” He added that the cast was also a huge draw for him.

De Gouw shared similar enthusiasm for the cast and the intimacy of the story. "We did a read together, Sam and I, and anything that he says is so beautiful and believable and so complex that I knew [Sam’s] Danny would be such a delight to watch and stand opposite," she said. “…There’s also something so lovely about doing what is essentially a four-hander, as you’ve got these four core characters who are so interwoven with one another. So, I really love the intimacy of that and the nuance that you can have in those conversations and in those relationships."

The chemistry between the cast translated into their performances on screen. De Gouw described the experience as "playful from start to finish," noting how collaborative everyone was in elevating the material. Heughan agreed, adding, "Every day, going to set, it was such a joy to sit down with the cast and Dries [Vos] and just trying to work out what is this scene about and how do they interact with each other?”

When it came to connecting with their roles, both actors found unique challenges. De Gouw found Becka’s journey “very organic,” but credited her co-stars for making it easier. "If you have someone who is there doing the work and being playful, then it makes it a joy," she said.

Heughan admitted Danny’s morally ambiguous choices were more difficult to navigate. "Some of his choices I would not agree with," he shared. "But then, you don’t know when you’re in that situation…He’s doing it because he’s trying to protect the people that he loves, albeit in a rather roundabout way.”

Preparation for their roles also varied. Heughan spent time shadowing a traffic cop in Scotland to understand Danny’s background. "It’s a very stressful job, I think, and quite an independent one," he explained. Meanwhile, De Gouw worked with a yoga teacher to bring authenticity to Becka’s role as an instructor.
