***The following is a detailed recap of episode 406 of FROM, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” and it contains spoilers for the episode.***

Boyd questions that Jade wants to go down into the tunnels where the monsters live because he thinks it will get everyone killed, all because he thinks the bones of the children are buried there. Jade tells him that they knew this was going to be an “out of the box swing” but asks why he had him even do it if he’s going to reject everything he found because it was during the trip. Boyd questions that, even if they put that aside and the bones are down there, how it’s going to get them home. Jade isn’t sure yet, but he tells him that there are examples of cultures and religions in history that hold the remains of the deceased in great reverence. The nightmare they are stuck in was built on a sacrifice. He suggests that the bones could be what anchors the spirits of the children there and asks if he’s ever wondered why the creatures never come out of the tunnels during the day. They could be protecting the very thing that makes the town possible. Boyd still is worried they will get everyone killed, but Jade says they won’t if they do it right, however, he expected Boyd to come up with the actual plan. Boyd says that he knows what is in Jade’s head may end up important, but that from his perspective, he wants him to help plan a suicide mission because of things he found on a mushroom trip. Jade questions what he has to do to prove it’s real and then mentions the door. He was never in the basement of Colony House and would have no way of knowing what is down there. He asks if if he is able to find the door if he would at least consider what he is telling him about the bones is true. Boyd says it would be a good start.

Acosta is looking at the Viewmaster. She asks Boyd when he comes down with Jade why it was fun for his generation, and he tells her they didn’t have phones. She says it’s like social media from the Stone Age. Jade says that it is the same basement he saw but more organized. Boyd tells him they are trying to build a narrative for the people who came before them to see if they missed anything. Acosta tells Jade that Boyd is just trying to keep her busy because he knows she wants to kill herself.

She asks what they need and Jade tells her he’s looking for a secret door that he saw while he was on mushrooms he found in the forest. Acosta tells Boyd that people have strange conversations there.

Jade finds the stack of furniture and starts pulling it down, asking them to help. Unfortunately, all that is behind them is a brick wall. Jade gets upset, saying that it is supposed to be there and that everything else is the same.

Jade says that maybe the door is a metaphor. Boyd comments that maybe the bones are too. Jade says that he understands he has doubts and if the situation was reversed he would too, and he knows what he is suggesting is incredibly risky. Boyd tells him that it’s suicide. Jade admits that it might be for some. Boyd questions Jade is okay with them losing some people and asks how many is too many. Jade asks him how many people are going to die if he keeps doing nothing and asks how many he’s already lost. Boyd grabs him and starts yelling, trying to threaten him. Jade tells him that there is only so long that he can hold the place together even with good intentions and at some point something is going to give or change and he’s going to lose the whole town. Kenny walks in as Boyd lets him go and tells Jade not to push him. Jade says that it’s their chance. He went looking for answers and found answers; this is their shot. Jade leaves.

Kenny asks what that was about and Boyd tells him to go outside with him. Boyd has told Kenny offscreen about Jade and Tabitha and the reincarnation. Kenny questions that Jade thinks digging up the bones will somehow help them get home. Boyd says he does – if the bones are even down there in the first place. Kenny asks him what he thinks. Boyd would have felt differently if he asked him before he got worms under his skin or before he found magical rocks in the forest that protect them from monsters. Boyd adds that he wasn’t trying to keep anything from Kenny. Kenny says he gets it; things haven’t exactly been quiet lately and asks if he remembers the “good old days” when they used to count the nights where nothing bad would happen. He then says there is something else they need to talk about and shows him Victor’s drawing of the Man in Yellow eating his mother.

Suddenly people start standing around watching Victor, who is on the roof, so Boyd and Kenny go to talk to him. Boyd asks what he’s doing up there, slowly approaching him. Victor says that when he was a boy, a man hated the place so much and was so scared all the time that he jumped, but it took days for him to finally die. He was trying to fix things, but it just made them worse. Victor questions Boyd is there because of what he told his father and says that he shouldn’t of told that. Boyd questions that the man in the suit came there like everyone else and asks if there is anything else he can remember about him. Victor tells him he can try. Boyd suggests they go inside, worried he is going to jump. Victor agrees.

Julie comes upon Sara and asks her what the paint she has is for. Sara says she wanted to do something nice for Sophia to make her feel at home. Her brother always used to say a fresh coat of paint will fix all your woes. She adds she doesn’t know what colors are in the cans. Julie says she came to apologize. She didn’t understand what she went through but she thinks she does now. Sara just asks if she wants to help and says she has an extra brush, inviting her inside.

Boyd questions that the Man in Yellow came to town just like everyone else. Victor just says he thought the suit was funny and that he seemed like a nice man. Boyd asks if he was alone when he came, and Victor thinks that he was but isn’t sure. Kenny asks if he remembers the kind of car he came in, and Victor says it was big and brown and confirms it’s one of the cars he took out to the woods, because he didn’t want to see it. Boyd asks if he can show them which one it is. Victor starts to get upset and Boyd says he won’t force him to do anything he doesn’t want to; he just wants to get as much information as they can and they need to find out if the man is something they have to worry about. Boyd says he is just trying to keep everyone safe and asks Victor if he will help him do that.

Donna, interrupting them, knocks and comes in. She tells Boyd he needs to come down to the shed. Kenny follows.

On the way they see Ethan who asks if they’ve seen Victor, and Boyd says he’s up in his room. Boyd asks where his son is, and Donna tells him that Ellis is fine; he went to check on Fatima. She tells him that Patty is down at the clinic; she got pretty banged up. Tabitha follows them into the shed where they see a covered body. Boyd asks who it is, and she tells him it was Roger. Donna tells him that they were attacked by giant dolls that came out of the lake and that the totems aren’t just decorative; Tabitha used it to kill one of them by driving it through one. The rest walked away. Sadly, that was after they got ahold of Roger. They found his body that morning. She uncovers him and his mouth is stitched up like the dolls, buttons sewn into his skin and over his eyes. Donna says that they left some of the food back at the settlement so they could bring back the totems. Donna asks if anyone needs a drink, because she does.

Meanwhile, Fatima asks Ellis to say something about the golem, which appears to be finished, and he tells her it’s just a lot to take in. She tells him she is not crazy. He says that after everything the place has done to her and still is, he just doesn't understand. He feels like there is so much more he should be doing to help and like he is the one failing. She says that growing up there were a lot of times when she was afraid and felt powerless, but those stories her father told her, she understands now why he told her the stories. The world was so scary, but if she could believe in magical things that was something no one could ever take away. They have seen so much darkness and lived with so much fear; she needs to believe in magical things.

Victor is drawing when Ethan comes in. He tells Ethan he is trying to remember bad stuff. Ethan asks if it’s about the suit they found in the forest and asks why he got so scared. Victor says he doesn’t want to tell him, because he told his father and he got really upset. After he refuses to tell him, Ethan says then that he won’t tell him what happened at the settlement. He then asks if he can draw with him. Ethan tells him anyway that the lake had monsters – giant dolls – in it. Ethan tells him that his mother killed one. Victor says his mother is pretty tough and that his own mother was too. She always smiled even if she was scared, because she knew that they would be scared if she didn’t. He doesn’t think his father is that strong.

Henry is in the sheriff’s station looking at the yellow suit when Sophia comes in. She asks if he’s seen the sheriff and he tells her to try Colony House. She says he looks troubled. He tells her it’s been a bit of a day and leaves. She stares at the suit.

Sophia follows him into the bar. She asks why there is a bar inside of a gas station and he says the better question is why is there a gas station in a town no one can leave. She says it’s a good point. She asks who makes the alcohol, and he says it’s his understanding there used to be a bartender who is now dead. She asks to join him. He goes to pour her alcohol but asks how old she is. She says she’s old enough to have buried her father and grieve so he pours her some.

Meanwhile, Donna is pouring them drinks in her room. Boyd wants to know more. Tabitha explains about her dolls and the nightmare coming to life. Kenny says our fears become part of the forest. He says that when the cicadas were all over town, Sara told him Nathan had always been terrified of them and she thought that when the people there died, their fears – their nightmares become part of the forest. Donna gets upsets and asks how they are going to tell people that they not only have to worry about the smiling monsters that come out at night but now they have literal nightmares they can’t even protect them from and asks how much more people can take. She goes out to splash water on her face but starts to fall, having a heart attack. Boyd catches her and tries to help and tells Kenny to take the van and get Kristi. Tabitha checks for a pulse while he does compressions.

Marielle and Kristi and Patty help Patty with ointment and bandages for her burn. Kenny comes running into the clinic, telling them Donna had a heart attack.

The three come running in Colony House and Marielle asks if Donna has a pulse. Tabitha says she doesn’t, and Marielle asks how long it’s been. Boyd says it’s been maybe 5 or 7 minutes. He did however start compressions right away. Kristi shocks her a few times as Boyd continues compressions. Donna doesn’t have a pulse. Boyd tells Kristi to hit her again as he continues compressions but Kristi tells him it won’t work. He yells at Donna that she doesn’t die until he says she dies and screams at her to open her eyes. Suddenly she breathes and her pulse, though weak is back. She doesn’t wake up though. Kristi says they need the monitor from the ambulance and Kenny goes to get it. Marielle asks how they will power it, and Boyd says he will take care of it.

Boyd runs to get Jade in the basement, asking about the extra wires for the radio tower. Jade takes him to the shed while Acosta looks on. Jade sees the covered body and asks who it is, but Boyd won’t take time to answer him. The wires are under it so they move the body and Jade freaks out when the tarp falls off Roger. Boyd tells him he’ll explain later, but Donna needs them and to get it together and help. They get the wires and rush back.

On the way back in, Bakta asks what is going on and if she’s going to be okay, but they don’t answer. Ethan comes out of the room with Victor and asks what happened and why everyone is sitting by Donna’s room. His mother tells him Donna had a heart attack. He questions she will be okay, and she tells him that they doesn’t know yet but that everyone is doing what they can. He gets upset and asks if it’s because of the dolls, and she tells him that sometimes things like this happen to people. He tells her that he wants to go see her before she dies. Tabitha says not to say that and that she isn’t going to die. He says she will, because everyone there dies and just to let him say goodbye.

They hook Donna up to the monitor which Jade hooks up via the lamp. It works. Her vitals are stable. Boyd asks why she isn’t awake. Kristi says that they don’t know how long her brain has been deprived of oxygen. He questions she will wake up, but Kristi doesn’t know. Kenny knocks saying that Tabitha is asking to bring Ethan in for a second, because he is really upset. Kristi says okay but just for a second. Ethan says to Donna that he won’t forget what she said, that fear is what makes us heroes. He promises that he will always do his best to be brave and that he loves her. His mother takes him back out.

Meanwhile, Henry and Sophia are still drinking and the bottle is empty.  Sophia says they should open another one and she will get it. There is broken glass on the counter. She brings over the bottle and asks him why he was staring at the suit in the sherif’s station. He finally says that the man who wore that suit did horrible things to his family. She questions he has family there and he says just his son now, who came with his wife and daughter forty years ago. She asks where that man is now, and he says he hopes he’s rotting in hell. She says they should drink to his family and he says to her father as well. She takes a drink and says there has to be something around to make it taste better and goes behind the bar. He says there isn’t; he’s looked. She says maybe he didn’t look hard enough and then purposefully cuts herself on the broken glass. He looks at her finger and says it doesn’t look too bad and goes off to find a clean rag. She goes over to his glass and drips her blood into it.

Randall stops Bakta coming out of the diner carrying food, asking what she is doing. She tells him she is going to make food for everyone at Colony House because Donna had a heart attack. He asks if she is okay and she says they don’t know yet. He offers to help.

Sara and Julie are painting Sophia’s room purple. Sara says it’s weird doing something normal and that she’s almost forgotten what it was like. Julie asks her what she misses most of the little things. She says she misses candy, while Julia says she liked donuts. Julie tells her about her father taking her to a donut shop when she was little, this daddy-daughter thing, and one day she told him she didn’t want to go anymore, because she wanted to hang out with her friends. Sara asks her what she meant when she said she understood what she went through. Julie says that something there convinced her that she could still help her father, like she could go back to the day it happened and save him. Sara hugs her and says she is so sorry it happened to her.

They wait outside Donna’s room. Ellis comes out and asks if there is news. His father says no and asks if he talked to Fatima. He says his wife is building a monster in a room full of dirt, but he thinks it’s what she needs. Marielle comes out and says that she isn’t awake yet but Boyd can go sit with her now if he wants.

Boyd comes in. Kristi leaves him to talk to her, saying if anything changes to let her know. He tells Donna to cut the shit and open her eyes. He says he wants her to listen to him: he cannot do this without her, so she needs to wake up. He says he isn’t saying goodbye. Khatri suddenly appears, asking what he will do if she doesn’t wake up, and Boyd asks him what kind of question that is. He says it’s a practical one.

Bakta complains about how Randall is chopping vegetables. She sees Elgin watching and tells him to help.

Boyd asks if Khatri remembers the night he came to town with his wife and son. Khatri says that he does and that he’s pretty sure Abby wanted him to shoot him. Boyd tells him that he scared them running into the middle of the street like a lunatic and then bringing them down to a bunker. Donna and Dale were there. The first question Donna asked was if any of them snored. He didn’t know what she was talking about. They just heard monsters, and she was talking about snoring. She looked at him calm and steady and said, “if you snore they will find us.” In the middle of all the fear and disbelief and chaos the little voice in the back of his head said she knows how to survive and they might be okay. That’s what got him through the night. The scariest night of his life and she got him through it, but he doesn’t think he ever told her that. They bumped heads in the beginning; she made it clear she didn’t like him. Khatri asks what changed, and he says he’d like to think they got to know each other a little. Boyd tells him that the answer is he doesn’t know what he will do if Donna doesn’t wake up.

Khatri says it’s time to get those people home. It may not be the moment to bring it up, but Jade already told him what he needs to do and asks if he’s going to ignore that over a missing door. Boyd gets angry and says it’s not the moment. Then, Donna suddenly wakes up. He calls in Kristi who checks her out. Boyd comes out and tells everyone she woke up.

Henry fixes Sophie’s thumb and they drink to her good health. He says that drink had some kick. She tells him that she had the strangest thought she can’t shake. They are trapped in a town they can’t escape from, surrounded by monsters that come from the forest at night, and she says none of it feels real. She asks if he’s ever wondered if it’s all just a dream.

Boyd goes out to the shed and Khatri says it’s great news about Donna, just too bad about Roger. Boyd questions he can’t let him have a minute. Khatri sarcastically says to take as much time as he needs; it’s fine. It’s not as if murderous dolls climbed out of the lake and attacked his people. Boyd asks if what Tabitha said about people’s fears, their nightmares becoming part of the forest after they die if that’s true. Khatri says he does think it might be. Boyd says “the tip of the spear” and that that’s what Martin said the creatures that come out at night are. Boyd asks him if the bones of the kids are in the tunnels, and Khatri says he doesn’t know. Boyd, starting to get angry, asks him what he does know. Khatri says they are running out of time. Boyd asks how he is supposed to take people down in the tunnels if he doesn’t even know if what Jade saw is real. Khatri says that some things you just have to take on faith. Boyd says not with something like this and goes into the shed to get a mallet.

Boyd goes directly down into the basement of Colony House and starts smashing the wall. He yells as he hits it. Jade, hearing him, rushes down. Boyd says if it wants him to go down into the tunnels and risk people’s lives, to show him the door. He breaks through and there is a door. Jade is shocked. Boyd tells him they are going to need a plan.
