***The following is a detailed recap of episode 408 of FROM, “Heavy is the Head,” and it contains spoilers for the episode.***

At Colony House, Acosta questions if they are sure Roger is dead this time. Donna tells Boyd that Steve got banged up, and it would have been worse if not for Elgin. Patty says that he is the one who stabbed Roger. People are arguing and Donna tells them to take it outside. Boyd tells her she should be in bed, but she says they are just starting to realize talismans won’t protect them from everything and for him to work on figuring out how to get the bones without getting everyone killed. Sophia appears and asks if the totems from the settlement worked to hurt the monsters. Boyd says they didn’t, and she tells him that is too bad. Ellis asks his father and Donna to come upstairs. Acosta asks what to do with the body and Boyd says to burn it.

Fatima has told Ellis and now Boyd and Donna, what happened with Smiley and Kenny and that it’s like she was there seeing through his eyes. Boyd questions she thinks she is the reason it didn’t kill Kenny, and she says that she knows she is. She tells them that after she connected with him, she felt something go cold inside her. That morning she saw something which she shows them. Her stomach is covered in purplish veiny lines.

Ethan is drawing pictures of people he knows in the town when Tabitha comes in the bedroom. He says that Victor always says that the pictures remember so that when everyone dies and he is there by himself, he doesn’t want to forget anyone. She tells him that what happened to Victor was awful, but that doesn’t mean it will happen to him. Ethan says Victor said he needs to be prepared, so that is what he is doing.

Ellis helps Fatima down the stairs and Boyd says he will meet them at the clinic.

Boyd is with Jade and Kenny in the bar looking at the model Jade made of the tunnels and asks why it’s better than drawing a map. Jade is defensive, saying he put a lot of work into it. Jade explains that the model incorporates everything they know about the tunnels from himself and everyone. He says he has a few different scenarios from how they can do it ranging on a sliding scale of safety and complexity. He asks if Boyd wants to hear the simple but super dangerous ones first or if he should start with the safer but more complex and possibly impossible ones. Boyd questions about the chamber where the bones are buried and says that if the tunnel is the only way in or out of the chamber, they don’t have a plan. He says that when he was in the army, they called it a shooting gallery, because once the enemy is inside, they are fish in a barrel. Boyd questions that even if they get past the monsters without waking them up and dig up the bones, what happens when they wake up when they are in there, and they block their only exit out. He tells Jade he needs to do better.

Kenny follows Boyd out, pointing out he didn’t even listen to what Jade had to say. Boyd says that he didn’t need to, because you never go into a hostile space without a secondary exit. Kenny asks then what they do, as they’ve already told everyone getting the bones is the key to getting everyone home. Boyd says maybe they go on a scouting mission with one or two people to the tunnels and see if there is a crack or something in the chamber they missed. He says that if they are going to do this, they have to do it right; he’s not going to leave people down there. Boyd suddenly hears gunshots. Kenny asks what’s wrong, not having heard anything. Boyd tells him he said he’d meet Ellis at the clinic. Kenny asks if Fatima is okay and he says he doesn’t know and leaves.

Henry comes into the diner and tells Bakta he needs something to do. He’s been drinking and it could help if he could keep himself occupied. She says he can give her a hand with lunch. The radio comes on and plays Miranda’s favorite song, “Blue.” He has a flashback of when Tabitha was in the car with him and the song played.

Acosta and some others burn Roger’s body in the driveway of Colony House while others watch from the porch. Patty tells Sophia that it never used to be like this. It was always scary, and she hopes Boyd is right about getting the bones. Ethan and his mother come up the drive and Sophia waves to him. He waves back.

Victor draws, teeth scattered on the papers. Tabitha comes to see Victor and tells him to tell Ethan it’s not true about him not being there alone, that it won’t happen. Victor says he can’t do that. She tells him it’s not helping and is scaring him. Ethan asks if he will teach him how to survive when he is alone. She tells him he won’t be there alone, but he says she doesn’t know that. He tells her that it won’t be as scary if he knows what to do. Victor says it’s a good idea, and she finally agrees to it.

Marielle does an ultrasound on Fatima and Kristi says she doesn’t see any internal hemorrhage, and there isn’t much she can tell them other than that physically she isn’t in any immediate danger. She says if they were anywhere else, she would say they were varicose veins from abdominal distention, but they are in the town, so they are beyond a standard diagnosis. Fatima questions that after Kristi did the autopsy on Smiley, she said that the monsters used to be human, and all their organs were human. She asks if it’s possible she’s turning into one. Ellis says that’s not what’s happening and asks if Kristi can make it stop, but Kristi tells him that they don’t even know what is happening. Marielle suggests that it might also not be a bad thing, because it enabled her to save Kenny and maybe stopping it is not what they should be focusing on. Ellis does not agree and doesn’t want to hear it, asking if they see her stomach and if any of that looks like a good thing. Marielle says that for all they know it could be a temporary side effect, but what is not temporary is that Kenny is alive and wouldn’t have been. She questions that he doesn’t see how it could be helpful, and Ellis starts to get angry. Kristi tells all to take a breath. She tells Fatima that she wants to keep her there to monitor her vitals and watch for any changes. She suggests she goes to get some clothes for a few days.

Jade tells Kenny that there is only one way to enter. There is no version of this where they go spelunking and realize there’s a convenient exit. For all they know they buried the bones there for that reason. He tells Kenny that Boyd listens to him and he has to make him realize that this may not be the kind of plan where everyone who goes in comes out. Kenny questions he wants him to tell Boyd that he just needs to accept the fact people are going to die; he won’t do that. Jade says then that they aren’t going home. There is a reason that no one has ever gotten out of there, and maybe it’s because no one has been willing to make the hard decisions before. Kenny questions he will be one of the ones going into the tunnels making the hard decisions, knowing he was not planning to. Kenny leaves and Jade starts throwing stuff and screaming.

Boyd waits for Kristi to come out of the clinic to talk to her. He says he’s been trying to work up the courage to tell her that he lied to her about seeing things the other day. It’s happening more frequently, both seeing things and hearing things. He says he can’t lead the place if he can’t trust what he sees. The tremors in his hands start. She asks if the episodes are connected at all to the tremors, if they happen at the same time. He’s not sure. He admits it’s all connected to Abby. He tells her about Abby’s hands grabbing him at her grave. He says that he knows the place gets into their heads, but this is different. He keeps hearing a gunshot. He asks why it’s happening now; he can’t fall apart now when they might be close to something real. She asks what he wants her to do, and he says that if what Jade says about the bones is right, then he just needs to keep it together a little longer, and for her to give him something to help him do that. She tells him she wants to help, but there isn’t anything she can do.

Sophia, carrying a backpack, comes into the station and calls out to see if Boyd is there. She goes into his bedroom and starts looking through dresser drawers. She tries under the bed. She opens a cabinet and eventually finds the box with the yellow suit.

She comes back to Sara’s house who questions where she was. Sophia apologizes and tells Sara that she was scared when she heard what Boyd was planning and was already by Colony House. Sara tells her that if they are going to live together, she needs to know where she is. Sophia says she she didn’t mean to worry her and won’t do it again. Sara asks her what’s in the bag and what’s going on. She tells her that she thought if she could find a change of clothes, she would feel better but then realized they all belonged to dead people. She tells her she isn’t doing well, but Sara tells says that she’s handling things a lot better than she did when she first got there. Sara adds she knows where there are good clothes and she can help her later. Sophia says she would like that and that she is a good person. Sara tells her she will be at the diner sorting through the storage room if she needs her.

Victor has taken Tabitha and Ethan to the peach truck. He says that when he saw that everyone had died that was the first time he saw the Boy in White, who told him there were three things he would need. The first was food. He shows Ethan how he used a rock as a can opener and gives it to him. He tells him the worst part is when you get lonely, as everything is scarier, so you have to pretend you aren’t alone. That was the second thing. Victor says it was hard; he had to make friends with the things on the truck like the walls, floors and boxes, but he won’t have to do that, because he thought of something better. He brings out a stuffed bear and cardboard person that he explains he dressed in Miranda and Eloise’s clothes. He says when he talked to them, he could imagine what they would say back, and he wouldn’t feel as lonely. He tells Ethan they can change them into his own family. Victor says he didn’t find anything for Ethan’s father, but he thought they could make a scare crow. Tabitha, getting upset, stops him, telling him they are done. She tells Ethan he is never going to be alone, as she won’t let that happen. She says she’s going to get him out of there. Victor says that that’s what his mother thought too.

Henry thanks Bakta for letting him help out. She knocks over a tray, and he “wakes up” as a boy drops a tray of food. The boy calls out that his grandfather is awake. A quite different looking Victor wearing a suit and tie enters the room and tells Henry to stay with him. Henry asks him what’s happening. He tells him he’s in a care facility. Henry says he was in the diner chopping vegetables. Victor tells him it wasn’t real, and it might not be easy for him to hear, but a long time ago Miranda surprised him on his birthday with two hits of acid. There was something wrong with the drugs, and he had a bad reaction, and it was like he wasn’t there anymore. He’s been in the facility ever since. Henry asks about the boy, and Victor says it’s his son, Sebastian. He tells his dad that he just spoke to Eloise, and she’s getting on a plane and is flying out to see him. Henry questions she’s alive. Victor tells him she’s a schoolteacher. Henry says it can’t be real and passes out and is suddenly in the town again. Sara comes over to help Bakta clean up the mess. Bakta asks Henry if he’s okay. He says that he appreciates her letting him help, but he has to go.

Fatima stops getting ready, realizing Ellis is packing. He says he’s staying with her in the clinic, so she won’t be alone. She tells him that’s not why he’s coming. He says he doesn’t understand how Marielle could say any of this could be a good thing. Fatima questions what if it is. She tells him that she was so freaked out, it didn’t even occur to her. She connected with that thing, controlled it. If there is a way she can figure out how to use it, how to help them, why wouldn’t she try? She says he doesn’t understand how she feels, how it feels to feel that powerless in a place like this, at the mercy of things that have gotten inside her head – inside her body. It was inside her. Now she may finally have a way to take back control and fight back and could potentially help them go home. She questions he wants her to ignore that. Ellis says he wants her to acknowledge what it might actually do to her. She says she doesn’t care, but he does. He says if he loses her, there is no home for him to go to anymore. He says he understands she wants to help, and he wants her to feel like she has control again, but it’s scaring him. She hugs him. She tells him the truth is, what he is afraid of may already be happening, and if it is, she needs to be able to take what she can from it.

Kristi talks to Marielle, telling her that what she said to Fatima was way out of line. They have no idea what is happening to her, and she was terrified. Marielle defends herself, asking why she is the only one who sees the value in the fact Fatima saved someone’s life. They need to find every advantage they can against the monsters. Kristi says they need to be careful. This place has a way of making you think are doing good things that will help. Marielle says it also has a way of making you terrified to do anything. Kristi says she is terrified, but they have no idea what is happening to Fatima, and she isn’t willing to risk her safety so that she feels less afraid. Kristi says Fatima is her patient, and if she has something to say, to her to go through her. Marielle gets upset.

Jade says to himself there is only one way in or out. As he is picking up the items he threw, he has an idea. He has a flashback, remembering the symbol in the ceiling of the cave.

Kenny comes into the station to talk to Boyd. Boyd’s bedroom has been ransacked. He tells Kenny that someone was in there, and the suit is gone. Kenny asks him why someone would come in there just to take the suit. Boyd sarcastically says maybe the guy it belonged to got tired of walking around naked in the woods. Kenny asks if Victor or Henry might have taken it. They are interrupted when Jade runs in yelling for Boyd. Boyd asks him about the suit, but he says to forget the suit, he knows how they are getting in and out of the cave: the bottle tree.

Sophia goes into the Matthew’s home. She finds Ethan’s drawings and gathers them up.

Tabitha tries to get Ethan to leave, but he says they aren’t done yet. Tabitha says that Jade and Boyd are working on a plan to get them home, but Ethan asks her what if it doesn’t work. He says that Miranda thought she would get everyone home, but they all died. He asks how she knows it won’t happen again. She tells him that things are different this time. She and Jade have memories that Miranda didn’t have. Tabitha tells Victor that Miranda tried so hard. She knows, because she feels what she felt and knows how much his mother loved him and how badly she wanted to take him home but didn’t have the answers she needed. She says she does have them because of Miranda; she’s the one that led her to the tower and to Henry. She tells Victor that she is the reason he gets to go home. Tabitha says she doesn’t think she came back just to free the children, but she came back for him as well and is going to take him home. She tells them they are going to go to town. She takes both their hands and says they aren’t going to draw anymore pictures, because neither of them are going to be alone ever again, she promises. Victor accepts it.

Jade, who has brought Boyd and Kenny to the bottle tree, says that the whole time he’s been focussing on the entrances and exits that are there now when he should have been thinking about the exit that used to be there, the hole in the ceiling with the roots that formed the symbol. Jade says that Victor said the roots became a tree, the bottle tree, and they are standing right above the cavern the bones are buried in. Boyd said they couldn’t go into the tunnels without a second exit and they need to make one. Boyd questions he wants to cut down the tree, and Jade clarifies he wants to pull it out by the roots. He explains there is a clearing near the road and if they get the truck and the van and use the chains plus the other trees for leverage, it will be like pulling a stopper out of a bottle. He suggests they send a team down there while the monsters are asleep, block the chamber and put up a talisman up, and while they dig for the bones, there is another team working on the tree. By the time the bones are dug out, the tree is out, and they lift everyone up to safety, get back to town and are behind closed doors by sunset; it’s easy. Kenny says it could work. Boyd asks what happens when the first group is down there, and the tree doesn’t come out, or the chain breaks, or they don’t have enough leverage. Jade says that isn’t going to happen, and Boyd questions he knows that for sure. Because what he wants to know is what plan B is when the tree doesn’t come out and they have five or six people barricaded in the death trap with no place else to go. Jade says he asked for a solution to an impossible problem, and he gave him one, and now he wants a plan B. Boyd says he isn’t sending people down into the tunnels on a hope and a prayer that they pull the magic tree out by its roots and that landscaping is not a plan. Boyd stomps off.

Boyd hears Kenny calling. He goes to him and sees him suddenly get shot down. He tries to help him, but he stops responding. He’s dead. Then Boyd sees bodies of the others: Tabitha, Jade, and Donna. Next, he sees Ellis’s body with Abby kneeling over him. She turns to Boyd and blood pours from her mouth. Suddenly it’s all gone, and he realizes it was a hallucination. He screams, asking what the town wants from him.

Henry goes to the rainbow rocks Victor made to talk to his wife. He says she was always the smart one. He asks if the things he’s seeing could be real. He says it seems like getting his brain fried on acid makes a whole lot more sense than anything else there. He says that everything is so nice in that place he’s seen. Victor wears a shirt and tie and they have a grandson, and Eloise is on a plane. He questions if he could really be so lost all that time, or did he come all this way so that he could finally go home. He asks her for help. He hears the song again. He wakes up and his “grandson” is playing it on a cellphone. Victor says it’s working. The doctor tells Henry she needs him to focus. He’s getting stronger, but if he wants to stay, there is something he needs to do, exactly as she tells him. She says that the mind craves what is familiar, and he’s lived in the delusion for too long that his mind believes it’s real. Telling himself that it’s not real isn’t enough. He has to forcibly disconnect from whatever is anchoring him to that version of reality; he has to eliminate the anchor. The music stops, and Sebastian says he lost service. Henry starts to wake up and is back at the rocks. He questions what he has to do to forcibly disconnect and begs his wife to help him go back.

Kristi takes Fatima’s pulse, looking worried. She asks Fatima some medical questions, but she feels fine other than the marks, and the cold sensation is gone. Fatima asks Marielle if she really thinks it’s possible for her to control it. Marielle really doesn’t answer at first, but then says there are a few things they can try. Kristi tells her she wants to talk to her out in the hall. Marielle starts telling Kristi that Fatima wants to try, but Kristi stops her and says her blood pressure and heartrate is so low that, medically speaking, she shouldn’t even be alive.

Victor, Tabitha, and Ethan walk back to town to the house. Ethan asks if it’s okay if he and Victor go to check on Donna, and she says she will meet them there. She goes into the house and the phone rings. The voice on the phone says it’s Thomas and to come to the RV or he will hurt Julie and Ethan.

Khatri tells Boyd that he knows no plan of Jade’s will ever be good enough for him. He follows him into the station. Boyd yells at him just to tell him what he wants. Khatri tells him he needs to get over the fact he killed his wife and accept that it was the only choice he had and nothing he did that morning could have saved her, just like he needs to accept that no matter how great the plan is, he’s probably going to lose people going into the tunnels. This isn’t peacetime; it isn't about keeping everyone safe, and it isn’t about saving everyone, it’s about saving as many as he can. When he shot Abby, he saved Ellis. If they go down and collect the bones, yes, he’s probably going to lose some people, but he could save a lot more. So, suck it up, make a choice, and live with it. Boyd gets mad. Khatri disappears.

Tabitha goes down to the RV. She sees Ethan’s drawings taped to it. The Man in Yellow thanks her for coming, saying he wasn’t sure she would. He asks if she knows who he is. He realizes she hasn’t remembered that part yet. He says Jim died where she’s standing. He was so brave. He says he really liked him and that he kept one of his teeth. She asks if he brought her there to kill her. He did not. They’ve been through so much together. She’s as close to a friend as he’s ever had. She and Jade are doing so well this time; he wouldn’t dream of killing her, not yet. He grabs her throat and says she’s there because they’re about to do something they’ve never done before. They’ve played this game so many times and the notion of them digging up the bones, they may have finally found the key to setting the children free and bringing her own children home – or they’re about to unleash a type of suffering she can’t even begin to imagine. He says he really missed her and will see her soon. He kisses her hand and leaves, singing to himself.
