FROM "The Calm Before" Recap: Built on Ritual

***The following is a detailed recap of episode 409 of FROM, “The Calm Before,” and it contains spoilers for the episode.***

FROMTabitha, upset, is telling Boyd that the Man in Yellow was in her house, even with the talisman, in the middle of the day. She knows, because he took Ethan’s drawings. She says he told her he killed Jim. Jade comes in saying that he knows Boyd wants to protect everyone and keep them safe, and he does too, which is why he’s decided that he is going to be the one going down into the tunnels. There is no perfect version of a plan, but it’s the best chance they have. Jade is surprised when Boyd agrees and says to walk him through it again. He tells him the man in the yellow suit is back. When the sun comes up he wants to be able to put shovels in the ground; they are getting the bones.

The Man in Yellow removes his suit and transforms back into Sophia then heads into town. She comes upon Elgin and Clara taking the flag down off the flagpole and questions what they are doing. Elgin tells her that Boyd told them to grab as much rope and chain as they could find. He tells her that people are going into the tunnels to dig up the bones, Jade, Kenny, and a couple of others he thinks. She says she hopes it works. He says they will be up all night making a rope ladder if she wants to come by. She says it sounds like fun. Clara says she is going to go check the shed, and Sophia asks if she can help and follows her. When out of earshot, she asks Clara if she knows who she really is and tells her to look closer. Sophia pulls down her glasses and her eyes turn black. Clara is scared. She asks if she remembers the bargain they made, because she needs her to do something for her.

FROMMarielle tells Kristi that she kept Fatima occupied with a puzzle that she told her was for a cognitive test. Kristi tells her to keep her busy while she goes to see Boyd and use the epinephrine if her heart would stop.

Sophia leads Clara into Sara’s house, taking a knife with her up to her bedroom. Clara is scared. Sophia comments on how Sara painted the room, but it’s not her favorite color. Sophia reminds her that when she first came there, they made a bargain, and she told her that at some point that she was going to need her help. Clara says that the day they met she started to wonder if it was real and questions if she’s really going to let her go home. She says that first Clara needs her to help her with something. Clara asks if she wants her to stop them from digging up the bones, but she doesn’t. She explains that when they go into the tunnels it’s not going to work out very well. They have the right idea, but this place it’s built on ritual, and with rituals, how you do something is just as important as what you do. She asks Clara if she likes games. Sophia says she loves them and is playing so many right now, but there is one or two that need a little push to speed things up a bit. She cuts the palm of her hand and asks for Clara’s hand. When Clara is reluctant, Sophia tells if she doesn’t do it, she will do horrible things to her. She slices Clara’s hand and says the next part will feel strange, taking her hand so the blood mixes. She tells Clara to relax and let her in.

Boyd, who’s come with Kenny and Jade to talk to Donna, tells her that once the group in the tunnels has the bones, they pull the tree and get them out with the ladder that they are putting together in the diner. Donna asks how the people in the tunnels are going to protect themselves when they are digging. If the monsters wake up, they are screwed. Kenny says that they are going to cover the entrance to the chamber with a tarp and hang a talisman on it, and it should be as good as a wall. Donna says that’s if the talismans work down there, that once they pull out the tree, it’s like opening a window, talisman or not, those things are coming inside. Whoever is in the tunnel is going to get slaughtered long before they can climb the ladder. Jade says that once the bones are out of the ground, they will keep the chamber safe. It’s why they are buried; he could feel in his trip that the monsters are afraid of them. Once they have them out of the ground, they will keep the monsters out of the chamber, at least long enough for everyone to get out. Donna says they are putting a whole lot of faith in a handful of mushrooms. She questions that if it works and they actually dig up the magical bones and get out alive, what happens next. She isn’t surprised to find out they don’t know. She says that they have figured out just enough to get themselves killed. Boyd says that they can’t wait around for the Man in Yellow to keep picking them off. She agrees but just hopes they are right.

FROMKristi wants to talk to Boyd. Kenny tells him that he and Jade will go get the radio started. She says they should go for a walk, and she starts to tell him about Fatima.

At Colony House, after talking Patty, Henry “wakes up” in the care home, eating with Victor. He asks Henry if he’s thought about what Dr. Boyd said, realizing why he reacts. He tells him knows the sheriff’s name is Boyd since he mumbles it sometimes, in fact, he’s heard him say all of the names. Victor asks if he’s thought about what the doctor said about the anchor that’s keeping him there. Henry says he can’t do it, because Victor is the anchor keeping him there; he can’t kill him.. Victor says that the broken boy who grew up alone isn’t real. He tells him that if he lets go of that version of him he gets to come back. Henry questions how he could even do it, and Victor tells him that the doctor said once he accepts it’s a dream, the dream will provide him what he needs, he just needs to accept it isn’t real. Henry wakes up and the real Victor asks him if he is okay. He tells him he is, but Victor knows he’s not and tries to help him. Henry tells him that he needs to be alone and leaves Colony House.

Boyd asks Kristi where Fatima is, and she tells him that they are trying to keep her at the clinic as long as possible and that Marielle is with her. She asks Boyd what the plan is, and he starts to get upset, because he doesn’t know. She suggests they talk to Ellis but he tells her she isn’t to talk to either. The best they can do is get her out of there, and that means their plan has to work. He tells her that he is going to need her to come out to the bottle tree. They have people going into the tunnels, and he doesn’t know what shape they are going to be when they come out. If someone gets hurt, they might not have time to make it to the clinic. He says Marielle can stay with Fatima and for her to bring as many supplies as she can. His hand starts bothering him. He says they are going to get through it and go home.

FROMJulie questions that her mother means the Man in Yellow was in the house, which she confirms. Ethan asks why the talisman didn’t stop him, but Tabitha doesn’t know. Julie asks if he’s the one that killed their father, and she tells them he is. She asks if it’s because of what she and Jade figured out and if that’s what “knowledge comes at a cost” means. Her mother admits she thinks that. Julie asks who is next, since she’s still looking for answers. Is he going to kill one of them? Tabitha says she won’t let that happen, but Julie questions how she will do that and questions she can’t see what the place is doing to her. It lies. Does she honestly believe she’s been there over and over and is some kind of savior. Julie tells her she saw the Man in Yellow once, eating dead people in the middle of the street. She thought that she was traveling through time and could change things and save their father, but that what she was really doing was giving herself seizures. Julie takes the talisman from the door and asks how they work, who made them. Tabitha doesn’t know. Julie says that if she has all these memories, she should know this. Her mother tells her it doesn’t work that way. Julie says maybe that’s because it’s not real. The place lies to them so they hurt themselves and each other. She asks her mother to please stop giving it what it wants.

Clara opens a thermos, unwrapping her hand and dripping blood into it, making sure no one is watching.

Clara goes into the clinic, telling Marielle she brought Fatima a family remedy. Fatima is doing a jigsaw puzzle of crows. Clara says since she heard Fatima wasn’t feeling great she made an old family recipe for her. It’s a mix of berries and herbs, though she had to improvise with a couple ingredients. Fatima takes it and thanks her. When Fatima just puts it down, Clara tells her she needs to drink it while it’s fresh and it will make her feel better. Fatima says it can’t hurt right and drinks it.

FROMVictor comes to the painted rocks. Talking to his mother, he says he is sorry he doesn’t come there much. He says he doesn’t really know what to think anymore. Boyd told he and Henry that she is Tabitha now, and if that is the case, that means she’s not with Eloise, that she’s not even there, but he doesn’t know where else to go. He says he thinks there is something wrong with his father and he doesn’t know how to help him. He says that Tabitha says they are going to go home, but questions what if Henry doesn’t make it that long. He says he doesn’t know things he’s supposed to say to someone. Suddenly the Boy in White is there. Victor tells him to go away, that it’s private. He asks what the Boy in White wants, who asks Victor if he knows they are going to pull down the bottle tree. It’s important, and he can’t let that happen.

In the church, Boyd, says he’s not there for himself, but whatever he has against him, there are good people there and to get them home.

Sara comes in, as Kristi said he was looking for her. He asks her not to repeat anything he says but that Fatima is at the clinic having tests done and that her heart rate and blood pressure is so low she should be dead but instead is walking around like nothing is wrong. Boyd says that when Fatima went missing, Sara came to him and said the voices were laughing, because they knew they couldn’t save her, but they did. He questions the voices were wrong and they did save her. She doesn't know. Sara tells him that she is coming with him the next day; she wants to be there. He agrees.

Tabitha is sitting on the porch looking at the talisman. Ethan asks her if she thinks it was really his father that he saw. He says that they went to the settlement because his father told him to find the Lake of Tears, and then bad things happened. She tells him that she doesn’t know. Ethan says that he thinks this place tries to make them afraid so they won’t believe in the things that can help them. All the things she remembers, she should listen to what it’s trying to tell her and not be scared to believe. She hugs him and suddenly sees seven ankhooey kids pointing at them, but then, just as quickly, they are gone. He asks whats wrong and she looks at the talisman.

Jade tells Boyd that they boosted the signal of the radio as much as they could. They won’t be able to talk to each other, but they do have a poor man’s Morse code and can signal from the chamber. Boyd tells them to pack all of it up for Colony House.

FROMVictor comes in, upset, asking if it’s true that they are pulling down the bottle tree. Boyd tells him that they need to get the people out of the tunnel safely. Victor tells them they can’t do that, and Jade says they don’t have a choice. Victor tells them the Boy in White said that the tree is important, and they can’t pull it down. Boyd asks then why he doesn’t just come in there and tell them not to do it himself. Victor says that it doesn’t work that way, but he knows things. Boyd asks him why the Boy in White won’t help them and says there are things there that have played games with them, and he thinks he is one of those things. Victor tells him he’s wrong and they can’t do it; he will stop them.

Victor runs off and Boyd goes after him, trying to get him to go to the station, but he won’t listen, so her grabs him and handcuffs him, and he starts screaming. Kenny tries to help. Victor says he’s trying to help them. Boyd says there are people risking their lives, and they can’t take any chances. Tabitha sees them and Victor yells to her to help. Kenny takes him away. Tabitha asks why he is in handcuffs. Boyd tells her about the Boy in White and that he is trying to prevent a problem before it happens. He says that if she wants to scrap the whole thing and forget about the bones, he will let Victor go. She tells him they don’t know who the Boy in White is or what he wants. Then she says it needs to be her that goes down into the tunnels. He starts to try to talk her out of it, but she explains it has to be only her and Jade. They are the ones who failed to save the children and the ones who they’ve been calling out to. She then shows him the talisman. There are two people in the center, and she believes it is her and Jade. He questions what happens to Julie and Ethan if something goes wrong. She asks who he thinks she’s doing it for. She says they only get to do it once, and there in this place, the way that they do it matters. She tells him he has to trust her.

Boyd walks through town ringing the bell as the sun starts to go down. On the way he sees Sophia who says she’s going to go help out with the rope ladder, as it seems really important.

At the diner, Sophia is looking at the radio, messing with the buttons. Bakta tells her the they don’t actually work, but she presses one and it comes on. The radio plays as monsters screech. They start walking towards the diner. The nurse monster asks what they are doing in there. Patty freaks out, but Bakta tells her to ignore them. Acosta says to stay focuses and close the blinds. Meanwhile, Sophia is using a knife on the ladder discretely.

Fatima tosses and turns in bed. She sits up in pain, her stomach hurting. She finds hair on the pillow. She looks at the marks on her stomach and ends up knocking the thermos on the floor.

FROMKenny watches Victor in the cell and tells Boyd he’s just sitting there. Boyd says he is angry and scared. He tells him there is something they need to talk about. He tells Kenny that he isn’t coming with them to the tunnels; he needs him to stay behind. Kenny doesn’t agree. Boyd says all planning aside, they don’t know what is going to happen, so they have to look at the worse case scenario. Donna will need help keeping the place together and to think of it like the continuity of government in the event of a catastrophe. He wants him to do his part. Kenny asked him to to stand down when he wanted to be the one to test the totem, and he was right, and he’s asking him to stand down now. Kenny reluctantly agrees. Boyd pulls out the last of Father Khatri’s stash of alcohol for them to drink. They toast to better days.

Jade puts shovels and stuff in a bag. Ethan asks his mother why they can’t just stay in the house while she is gone, but she tells him they will be safer there at Colony House. Ethan questions that someone else couldn’t go down into the tunnels, but she tells him it has to be her. Clara watches. He asks what happens if she doesn’t come back. She says to remember what Jade said: the bones will protect them when they are down in the chamber, and when they are back they will be closer to going home. He questions how they will protect them and Jade says it’s just the way they work. She tells him they will be okay and hugs him goodbye, telling him he has to be strong. Jade says they should get going. She tells Julie goodbye.

Jade tells her she’s lucky. No one tried to talk him out of it.

Everyone works at the bottle tree. Sara tries to get a signal on the radio. Tabitha and Jade head in the tunnel. They make their way towards the chamber.

Elgin is looking through stuff in storage when he finds some photographs. Clara tells Sophia she thought she would want to know that things have changed and only Tabitha and Jade are going into the tunnels. Sophia says she should have told her sooner, but she just found out and questions she still gets to go home. Meanwhile, Elgin comes out of the back and tells Sophia to check out the photo. The girl in the photo looks just like her. She tells him that’s because it is her. He asks how that is possible. Sophia tells Clara to lock the doors and tells him she can only take the form of people who have died there and that she really wishes he hadn't seen that.

FROMOnce in the chamber, Jade and Tabitha duct tape up the plastic tarp and hang the talisman.

Meanwhile, the others are working on pulling out the tree. Sara tells them Jade and Tabitha are in the chamber now, because she hears them on the radio. They use the truck to start on the tree.

Jade and Tabitha start digging where Jade says they are buried. The monsters wake up and start coming towards the noise. They continue digging. Jade hits something solid. They uncover the grave as the monsters continue ever closer. They struggle to pry up the rock but eventually get it moved out of the way, revealing the bones of the children. Tabitha sees the cowboy monster. At the plastic, he says, “You know, you really shouldn’t be doing that.”
